Weight Range Calculator

Calculate where you land in a paraglider's weight range by entering your body weight, the weight range of the wing, and (optionally) the weight of your gear. A standard estimate of 24% of your body weight will be used if you don't know the weight of your gear. Weights below are mixed, since most in the U.S. use freedom units, but wing and gear manufacturers all use metric.

My nakedsexy! body weight is lbs. The wing and size I am interested in has a weight range minimum of kgs and a maximum of kgs. This is completely optional, but the weight of my gear (wing, harness, and other incidentals) is lbs and I would also like to include ballast weight of lbs.

Results

Enter some weight values above to see your results.

For this wing and your current all-up flying weight (including ballast), you are % into the weight range. You are over the weight range for this wing and size. Try a larger size or a different brand, as different brands tend to have slightly different weight ranges. 81-100% of the weight range is high. You may see a slight increase in speed (trim and bar), but increased sink rates (less "floaty"). You may get collapses less often, but collapses may tend to be more significant. 60-80% of the weight range is ideal. 40-59% of the weight range is close to the middle of the range, and while less than ideal, not significantly so. You may see a slight reduction in trim speed, but improved sink rates. You may also get more collapses, but collapses would tend to be less severe. You are low in the weight range for this wing and size. Try a size down or a different brand, as different brands tend to have slightly different weight ranges. You are under the weight range for this wing and size. Try a smaller size or a different brand, as different brands tend to have slightly different weight ranges.

About soarcal

This app is meant to make checking weather and forecast information for many of the popular Southern California freeflight sites easier and faster. The author got tired of bouncing around to many different sites just to get simple information like current conditions, web cams, and forecasts, and also wanted to look at all of this stuff in a consistent format. This app is certainly not meant to take the place of local site knowledge specific to each site, so if any of the sites in this app are new to you, please click the "i" next to the site name to read the site briefing (the briefings are maintained by each local freeflight club).

Data Sources

soarcal pulls data from several different sources including NOAA NWS (local forecast), holfuy.com (select weather stations), weather.com (select weather stations), mesowest (select weather stations), Synoptic Data (select weather stations), and The Soaring Predictor (windgrams). Webcam sources are mostly HPWREN and AlertCalifornia. Daily Sounding is courtesy of Topa Flyers.

Privacy

This app does not collect any user data, store cookies, or employ any tracking info of any kind - the author simply doesn't care about that data nor has the time to act upon it. For those who sign up for shuttle notifications, your email address is stored securely and will not be shared with anyone, ever, for any reason.

Inquiries
